Q: How did you get into fashion modeling?

My love for fashion, my passion for glamour and makeup, and clothing brands drove me into the modeling field. I love being in the spotlight and the ability to convey emotion in imagery makes me proud of the work I do. My mother was a big influence in my life with keeping me on track with achieving my goals. She actually put me into a modeling school at the tender age of 6. She believed this is what I was meant to do.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

The last 12 months have been exceptional! I’ve had lots of online features, many doors have opened up, and I’ve also had magazine covers! I’m thankful.

Q: Who inspires you?

My mother. She manages to stay humble and meek in all things that she does. She’s very patient with others, and she remains respectful to everyone she comes in contact with. She always strives to exceed all her goals and expectations.

Q: Which modern day fashion designers or fashion icons do you look up to?

Some of my favorite designers would be Dolce and Gabbana, and also Alexander McQueen. Their styles range from sleek, sexy, to bold, abrupt, and loud. I feel fashion should be loved and respectfully displayed in all of those styles. They make fashion ‘cutting edge’.  My favorite models right now would be Miranda Kerr, she’s not just one of the best Victoria’s Secret models, but she consistently diversifies her work. She appears in makeup, perfume, and has walked to runway for top designers as she walked the runway for Christian Dior, Lanvin, and Chanel.

Q: Do you prefer to shoot on location or in the studio?

I prefer a little of both actually. I love the outdoors shoots, they provide a little more variety and color. The studio shoots also have the benefits of special effects and lighting that can work in your benefit as well.

Q: Do you have any interesting stories about a particular photo shoot, or a casting you’d like to share?

My best experience is working with fashion designers. I come from a background where I have a deep appreciation for art and design. Many of these designers put their hearts and soul into creation of their clothing. The produce unique, one-of-a-kind couture pieces, that some even hand sew. I’m very proud to work with those designers to showcase their awesome apparel.

Q: How do you prepare for a fashion shoot or show?

Generally, I start my day off with a protein shake, I exercise, then stretch, take all my vitamins, make sure I have a bottle of water, and a granola snack bar in my purse, my favorite lip gloss, and off I go.

Q: Do you have a favourite photograph?

Yes, my original shoots that I did with the Ford Mustang are my favourite. I love the car, the bikini, and the pictures were amazing!

Q: Who is your favourite photographer?

Currently, the one from my hometown, CS Jackson Photography. He’s doing great work, and continues to move forward in his profession.

Q: Is there anybody you would like to work with?

Not specifically, but I love collaborating with highly creative individuals, and those who are passionate about their work.

Q: What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion means style, different, edgy, smart, sexy, sleek, fun, bright, bold, tiny, and large. It’s an expressive form of art!

Q: How would you define your personal style?

My style would be edgy, sexy, and fun. I love vintage and old looking clothing. As far as color goes, give me bold or subtle, and I will push it to the limit.

Q: Where are you based?

I’m based out of Chicago, born and raised there. However, I travel to Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Miami frequently.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

Growing up in Chicago is a fun and fast paced lifestyle. I grew up with the beach behind my house (Lake Michigan). So, most of my childhood was spent swimming in the water, making sand castles and eating Chicago style dogs at the park next door. It was great. As a Chicagoan, when you leave the city, you learn to appreciate all that the city has to offer. We offer a large variety of foods from a hundred different cultures, beautiful art and museums throughout the city, as well as a wealth of shopping, and entertainment activities.  You could probably spend 10 years in the chi and never get to do all the activities we have going. I love it!

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Achieving numerous magazine covers has definitely been a career highlight. It takes some people years to get covers. I’ve managed to get 4 in 1 month! I’m humbly thankful.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve over the next 12 months?

Over the next 12 months, I would like to be the “face” of a major label brand or company. I would love to participate in TV commercials and see myself in major motion picture films.

Q: What do you do to relax?

I exercise, and then drink tea, and eat English muffins with ham and eggs. This does it up for me!

Q: Where would your favorite holiday (vacation) be and why? I love Christmas, specifically I would love to take a vacation to Switzerland, and experience skiing, and the holiday spirit they have going on there. I think it would be a fun trip!

Adella Pasos

Adella Pasos

Q: What songs are on your iPod at the moment?

I have a LARGE variety of music stretching from Simon and Garfunkel to Andréa Bocelli, and then from Red Hot Chili Peppers to Lil’ Wayne. I’m a big fan of all music; there is not one genre of music that I dislike.

Q: Do you have any interesting hobbies? I have a few hidden talents. You would probably not expect to know that I’m a painter, and artist in nature. I have a passion for the arts, and believe art has much relevancy to all of our lives. I specialize in oil and acrylic painting, sculpture and also graphic arts.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring models what would it be?

I would say like my mother tells me, “stay strong, and never give up “. The end isn’t near, keep pressing towards the future and put 100% into all of your work. It’s very important to stay hungry for achievement. This is a winning combination in my book.

Q: What motivates you to do what you do?

My drive and ambition to be great and do great things helps motivate me to get to the next l I aspire to move my career to a level that isn’t stipend by just what one industry depicts it to be. I would eventually want to achieve a global presence, and use it to also give back and help others.  I know many say, “girl, you set your goals high”, however I was always told, “reach for the stars baby”!

Spotlight Interview – Joy Hu

Joy Hu (胡歆宜) is a Chinese-Canadian fashion designer who is currently living and working in New York. In 2012, Joy established her fashion brand known as ‘Joy Hu Collection (歆宜禮服)’ and at Urbanity Chic, when we checked out her Spring / Summer 2013 we were impressed by her fusion of Oriental and Western influences. Despite Joy being extremely busy promoting her current line but also working on her new 2013 / 2014 collection we were delighted when she agreed to be interviewed by Urbanity Chic. Read the entire interview below where Joy discusses, amongst other things, how she initially became interested in fashion design, what fashion icons she is inspired by and what she does to relax when not working.

Q: What are you currently working on?

Currently I am working on our Fall / Winter 2013/2014 collection, which will debut in NYFW 2013.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

2012 has been a turning point for me. I felt I grew up with my brand. I did the rebranding for my new label; my designs have become more sophisticated and more elegant.  Many celebrities were seen wearing my clothes this year such as Miss Universe Natalie Glebova and Miss Jamaica Chantal Zaky. Media include CTV and Flare. Also, I relocated to a bigger showroom in Toronto and began a showroom in New York this year. Another exciting project was I started to work with some well-known stylist who works for American Vogue. I have been working with top photographers for worldwide submission.

Q: What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion for me is art and self-expression. It requires creativity but it also reflects personal lifestyle.

The more I grow the more my understanding for fashion changes. My first sketches were for my Barbie. I used to style her hair, paint her nails, and glue elements to her clothes. Back then there weren’t any add-on pieces for Barbies so I made them myself. Also, I designed outfits for my favourite comic character -- The Queen of Egypt, from Japan, in a comic book called Daughter Of Nile. I remember spending days to sketch the same dress over and over again until it was perfect. Designing was always on my mind. Even in my dreams -- I used to dream about designs. So much work goes into designing an item. I believe that’s why brand names are expensive and everyone is after them -- essentially, fashion is art, which is difficult to justify. Whereas, the value of a brand comes much easier. Each brand has its own style, each brand is associated with a word: classy, sexy, high-end, mid-class, street fashion and so on.

Joy Hu Collection

Q: Which modern day fashion designers or fashion icons do you look up to?

Christian Dior S.A. and Valentino are my favorite designers. One is fun and elegant, while the other is very proper and elegant.  One thing they have in common is their fame for their handcraft. I like to put both fun and proper style into my collection because this reflects the person I am.

Q: What was the first thing you ever designed?

I designed my first piece when I was 13 years old -- it was a princess dress.  I sketched the design, used the fabric my dad brought home from London, and got it made by a high-end couture house.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration?

My customers and museums. I started going to art museums at the age of six -- I think that’s where most of my inspirations come from. Whenever I travel, the first spot I will visit is the art museums and art galleries. Essentially, the goal of my line is not just to create art but also to make each woman look fabulous, therefore I am always taking feedback from my clients and meeting their needs.

Q: Who inspires you?

Guys are my muse, either the ones I date or the ones who are my close friends. Sounds strange, doesn’t it? Well, its not! Think about this -- a big part of clothing is for social reasons, so technically women dress for men most of the time.

Joy Hu Collection

Joy Hu Collection

Q: How would you define the style your work exemplifies?

I am a very girly girl. I can wear dresses everyday: at work, home, and when I go out with my friends.

My personal style is a cocktail of romantic elegance with a modern sexy chic twist and a dash of diamond.

Since fashion is art to me, each piece needs to be hand-made using high end and often-unusual European fabrics, which employs signature hand-embellishing techniques in each creation. I also like lace. I find it super-feminine and sexy. There is a saying: “Lace is a woman’s second skin.” Therefore, for my ready-to-wear collection I mainly use lace as fabric.

Q: How would you define your personal style?

My designs represent me -- a reflection of who I am. I can’t imagine myself designing something that I would never be seen in.

Q: Where are you based?

Right now I am based in NYC and Toronto. I travel to London and Paris quite often.  I see the world like a village -- within ten hours I can be anywhere I want to be. I never limit myself to one place geographically. I want as many people to see and wear my clothes and not because I want to generate more money but more for a feeling of belonging.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

I was born in China, but my Chinese friends always say I don’t think like a typical Chinese even when I was in China. I guess its due to the fact that I started to learn about western culture since the age of three, because my dad is in the import and export business so he gave me the opportunity to learn about how the world operates at a very young age. I think China is very proper and regulated, with lack of freedom to encourage worldview but the people are super-hard working.

Canada is very peaceful and accepts differences. America is a very productive country and more straightforward like me. If I don’t like you I am not going to waste a minute with you. This is why America has been one of the most powerful countries in the world. England seems proper from outside but actually very wild and rebellious inside which is also who I am sometimes. France is very delicate and romantic. Italy is very fun and creative.

So if I could choose, I would like to live in Beijing, Toronto, New York, London, Paris and Milan. But I would call myself Miss International -- a Chinese-Canadian who works in New York, and everywhere else in the world.

Joy Hu Collection

Joy Hu Collection

Joy Hu Collection

Joy Hu Collection

Q: How would you define your city’s fashion?

If I call myself Chinese Canadian, then I would say Canada is mostly English Fashion as Canada used to be a colony of UK for a long time, and we have lots of European immigrants here. But nowadays, since we have lots of immigrants from all over the world, and they live in their own communities and have their own community shops, I can’t say there is real Canadian fashion.  But I can say that there are different styles of fashion created by Canadian Fashion Designers. Take me as an example, European style is my main style but after all I was born Chinese, therefore you can still see the trace of Asian culture. My style is “When West meets East”.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Celebrities who have worn my designs, magazines articles, features on TV and my showroom in New York.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve over the next 12 months?

My goal this year is to get my clothes into 50-100 different stores across North America and to start distributing in London also. To my dear UK readers, feel free to write to me: joy@joyhucollection.com

Q: What do you do to relax?

Aha! I like this question. Spiritual life is always a big part of my life. I practice Zen and I meditate. When I lose my inner peace, for whatever reason, I either go to a temple to mediate or I do yoga. Also, I like to do outdoor activities such as hiking. I love spending quality time with my family and friends. I believe in energy, so I hang out with people who have positive energy.

Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?

It depends on what kind of vacation I need. If it’s a learning vacation, which I do quite often, then it can be anywhere that I haven’t been to. If it’s more of a relaxing vacation then there is no such place as ‘holiday paradise’ for me. I find it’s more about whom I am vacationing with that matters. However, if I have to choose, I would definitely go somewhere where there is water. I am taking scuba diving classes so I will probably go somewhere with beautiful beaches.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

Uoon I -- Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto (Vrioon). It’s a balanced harmony of fast and slow beats. Strangely enough, this song turns me on so much.

Q: Do you have interesting hobbies?

Cooking, designing, painting. Simply creating makes me happy.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to tell our readers about you?

The person I am, I find, is always the hardest question to answer. As I evolve as a person and a designer, the view today doesn’t always stand for my view tomorrow.

Q: Where can we find out more about or purchase your work?

You can find more about me on my website: www.joyhucollection.com

You can purchase my ready to wear collection online at: www.highstreetdress.com

For exclusive custom dresses you will probably see me in person. You can send me an email request on my website. I always travel, so I could be in your area tomorrow!

Q: What motivates you to do what you do?

Passion. I love what I do.  I have a sense of belonging when I design. If it feels right just go for it! Never give up, but always learn from mistakes.

My favourite quote: “If something is not happening yet it doesn’t mean it will never happen, it just means you are not ready for it.”  Misfortune has always turned out to be a big fortune for me.

Spotlight Interview – Allegra Modelinc

Allegra Modelinc is a successful catwalk and fashion model who was brought up in Geneva but now lives and works in London. After learning about Allegra’s story and checking out some of her impressive fashion portfolio we were impressed and were delighted when she agreed to complete an interview with Urbanity Chic. Read the full in-depth interview below where Allegra discusses, amongst other things, what it was like growing up in Geneva, what fashion icons she would love to work with in the future and how her work in fashion supports her charitable work.

Allegra Modelinc

Allegra Modelinc

Q: How did you get into fashion modeling?

I started modeling by accident in 1999 at the age of 9 years old in Geneva (Switzerland). A good friend of my mom had her own agency (Seven) and thought I was pretty tall for my age. She gave me a try and I ended up doing catwalk regularly for the spring/summer and autumn/winter for a new brand fashion brand in one of the biggest shopping malls in the center of Geneva.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

The last 12 months have been rewarding for me. I have had the opportunity to do incredible catwalk shows for the London Fashion week, Pakistan Fashion Week, Zen Africa Magazine, I’ve also had the opportunity to model in the National Luxury and lifestyle awards seeing celebrities such as Stacey Solomon and Lucien Lavinscout.

Q: Who inspires you?

God and my mother are my main inspirations in life. God blesses me to carry out all my goals and my mom taught me to have determination and be independent from an early age. In the fashion industry there’s plenty models who inspire me; such as Beverly Peele, Naomi Campbell (she’s such an icon!!), Waris Dirie for her amazing journey and humanitarian organization, Liya Kebede, Alek Wek, Yasmeen Ghauri, Tyra Banks and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

Q: Which modern day fashion designers or fashion icons do you look up to?

The list is long! There’s plenty of urban and high fashion designers that I love including Kesshia Kumari, Lucy in Disguise by Lilly Allen and her sister Sarah Owen, Jean-Paul Gautier, Manish Malhotra, Victoria Beckham, Chandra Maharaj, Mary Tataw E etc…

Allegra Modelinc

Allegra Modelinc

Allegra Modelinc

Q: Do you prefer to shoot on location or in the studio?

I found shooting on location more inspirational. However I prefer to do studio shoots when it’s for highlighting an item such as bags or a shoe collection.

Q: Do you have any interesting stories about a particular photo shoot, or a casting you’d like to share?

My casting for Botswana at London Fashion week was one of the most memorable for me. I had a meeting at the Embassy of Botswana at Oxford Circus in London. I was welcomed and treated like an important politician (laugh). I have good memories of that occasion.

Q: How do you prepare for a fashion shoot or show?

I just take care of myself by doing beauty sessions, relaxing when I can to look good and to be fresh and full of energy for the big day.

Q: Do you have a favourite photograph?

I love the nude picture of Grace Jones taken by Jean-Paul Goude. I found it brilliant!!

Q: Who is your favorite photographer?

From all the photographers I’ve worked with until now, Marija Berjoza is my favorite. Oliver Morris is also excellent. He can be very impressive when you first meet him (laugh). I would also love to work with Jean-Paul Goude and Anne Geddes.

Allegra Modelinc

Allegra Modelinc

Q: Is there anybody you would like to work with?

In term of photography, Anne Geddes and Jean-Paul Goude are my working goals’ dream. I love their work, what Jean-Paul Goude created with Grace Jones remain legendary until today and Anne Geddes managed to touch people with her intimate and crushing portrait of babies and women. When it comes to brands, I would love to work for Juicy Couture, Victoria Beckham and Kimora Lee Simmons.

Q: What does fashion mean to you?

For me, fashion is a form of art and freedom. It doesn’t have limitations, rules, social status or color. It not only promotes an idea, a dream, and a creation of a designer but it can also be used for charity like we saw with Oliveiro Toscani’s work with the United Colors of Benetton.

Q: How would you define your personal style?

I define myself as a polyvalent woman in term of style. I do not have a specific style it all depends of my crush for the outfit I see. I can look classy chic one day & funky the next one.

Q: Where are you based?

I am based in London but travel to Switzerland and France quit often.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

I’m from Geneva, in the French speaking side of Switzerland. It’s a small international city where the quality of life is good; with lovely views of lake of Geneva and UN Headquarters. In wintertime, it’s also a great place to be for skiing, a sport that I love to do. In term of fashion opportunities it unfortunately wasn’t the right place to be for me, as Switzerland doesn’t have a developed fashion industry.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Working in famous fashion weeks and the National luxury and lifestyle awards were the greatest experiences I’ve had so far.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve over the next 12 months?

I would like to work with my favorite designers and photographers.

Allegra Modelinc

Allegra Modelinc

Among those my favourite one would be Botswana because I love their culture and political policy, Mexico (Coyoacan) because this is where my favorite painter Frida Kahlo lives. I’d love to discover the country. I ‘d also like to visit St Lucia. I feel attracted to that beautiful Island, as well as Dubai.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

My top songs these days are; A Day in the Life of Benjamin by Andre 3000 (Outkast), Come Nuh Baby by Miss St Lucia 2010 Aiasha Gustave, Smile by Hil St Soul, Amazing Grace by Destiny’s Child, You Know What’s Up by Donell Jones and Left Eye, Till The Dawn by Drew Sidora, Wine Slow by Gyptian, Sincerely Jane by Janelle Monáe, Michael Jackson’s Earth Song, Carolina by Awilo and Didn’t Cha Know by Erykah Badu.

Q: Do you have any interesting hobbies?

I love skiing, reading history/political books and traveling. I have been to 10 countries and have visited over 45 cities in France, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Greece, United States of America, England and Switzerland.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring models what would it be?

To believe in your dream, have faith, work hard and keep your integrity.

Q: What motivates you to do what you do?

My faith leads me through amazing opportunities and my personal history. I grew up in poverty but was taught about perseverance and hard work by my mother from an early age.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

I’m an activist model and have been working with various charity organizations such as Save The Children. My mother has also founded her own charity cause “soupe populaire Allegra & Michel-ofik” that’s aim is to take care of extremely poor children that live on the streets in an area of Kinshasa in the DR Congo.

Editor’s Note: Allegra’s great bone structure and dynamic energy will ensure that she continues to be in demand over the coming months and years as a fashion model. At Urbanity Chic we’re also really impressed how she uses her fashion career to support her charity work that definitely makes a difference to those most in need.

Q: How did you get into professional photography?

I got into photography this summer actually. Iv always been quite artistic so I have always had that eye. I decided I wanted a big DSLR for my 21st birthday and that’s where addiction began.

Q: What do you enjoy most photographing?

I love the freedom that you can have as an artist. Also people are so critical of themselves so if I can give them photos they enjoy of themselves that’s great.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

Wonderful, I feel I have found what I really want to do with my life. Being able to put 100% into everything you love is just amazing.

Q: Who inspires you?

Anyone that loves to create. I think being artistic and creating beautiful things can be magical.

Q: Which modern day fashion designers or fashion icons do you look up to?

I look up to Jessie J, I think her style and look is very original.

Q: What makes a good photographer in your opinion?

Having a good imagination, I have never really had any Lessons in photography so I believe it isn’t just about learning the technical side, its putting what’s in your head into a piece of artwork.

Lauren Wright Photography

Q: Do you prefer using film cameras or digital?

Using Digital. This is mainly because I’m a big geek when it comes to photo shop! I think its great the fact you can give photos completely different feels.

Q: Do you prefer to shoot on location or in the studio?

I think both have their uses, but I love location because it has a very certain feel about it often helping the model create that feeling or mood. On the other hand I find the studio interesting in a way the model has to work harder and great things can come out of this.

Q: Do you have any interesting stories about a particular photo shoot you’d like to share?

I was doing some test shots with my flat mate one time in the bath. We ended getting some great shots out of it, but as you can imagine it was rather funny her sitting in the bath trying to look sexy.

Q: Do you have a specific style of photography that makes you unique?

I think I use a very high amount of clarity and color on my photography. The Image I try and get across is very clear

Q: Who is your favourite photographer?

Rankin! His photography is just so beautiful. I love that when he photographers well known people he really captures their personalities.

Q: Is there anybody you would like to work with (either behind or in front of the camera)?

Jessie J definitely, I think with her style the shoot would be nothing but fun.

Q: What does fashion mean to you?

A way to express yourself! However you feel that day!

Q: How would you define your personal style?

I cant really put a label of my style. I’d say it’s however I fell that day! Sometimes I go through pin up moods, next I’m wearing a big woolly jumper with a skirt.

Spotlight Interview – Cleo Miami

Cleo Miami is a commercial fashion and runway model from London. At Urbanity Chic we’ve noticed some of Cleo’s portfolio for a while now from afar and we were delighted when we finally organized an interview that despite her hectic schedule she agreed. Read the full in depth interview below where Cleo discusses, amongst other things, what creative projects she’s recently been working on. What her advice for people looking to work in the fashion industry would be and where her ideal holiday destination would be.

Q: How did you get into fashion modeling?

When I was fourteen years old I did a hair modeling competition for Antonio’s Hair Salon in Canterbury, Kent for my hairdresser and Sister in-law Chantal. It was such an amazing experience that I decided to follow my career as a model. I took the opportunity to move to London aged nineteen, I started networking and following Fashion trends and it kind of just fell into place from there.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

A lot of fun and very busy at times. I have been working on a number of projects including building my own modeling agency. I have so much to learn but I am enjoying every step it takes and I love meeting new people.

Q: Who inspires you?

I am not actually inspired by any one particular person more inspired by a type of person such as; someone who has come from nothing and has made something of themselves. It is so easy when you have wealthy and supporting parents, especially parents who are already well established in the industry that you would like to get into. I am very inspired by people who literally have nothing and they succeed in something that is hard to crack, such as the Modeling and Acting Industries, especially when they do it all on there own, It shows real courage.

Q: Which modern day fashion designers or fashion icons do you look up to?

I love designers who create elegant eveningwear; I am attracted to the glamour in clothes, pearls and diamanté’s is a must. I am also into new and up and coming designers. I would say the designer I am very into right now is: Luna Sky, her clothes are so beautifully created and really fit your figure well. Luna has amazing taste and her clothes never cease to amaze me.

Luna Sky: http://www.lunaskymoda.co.uk

Q: Do you prefer to shoot on location or in the studio?

I prefer to shoot in Studio as you can do so much with the backgrounds, lighting, props and themes. I also like shooting on location too as this can add more detail to images.

Cleo Miami

Cleo Miami

Cleo Miami

Q: How do you prepare for a fashion shoot or show?

First thing I do when I am booked for a shoot/show is arrange my clothes of what I am going to wear to the shoot and sometimes what I will be wearing for the after party. Then I go to get my nails and hair prepped ready for whatever treatments will be styled on the day. I then make sure I eat very healthily the day before and on the day to make sure no bloating happens especially if your shooting swimwear. When shooting, I like to go through certain magazines to see what kind of poses are in right now and keep myself updated with fashion trends. For Runway, I rehearse my walk and see of ways I can improve and change to make it better.

Q: Do you have a favorite photograph?

Yes, my favorites are the ones used in this interview.

Q: Who is your favorite photographer?

I do not favor just one photographer as they are all talented in their own right but I do really love: Mario Testino and Ellen Von Unwerth.

Q: Is there anybody you would like to work with?

I would love to shoot with Stylist Jen Rade, I love her style and confidence. Jen has worked with A-list stars such as Angelina Jolie, Pink and Cher.

Q: What does fashion mean to you?

To me it means personality, embracing who you are on the inside and broadcasting it on the outside. The fashion world is brutal and people’s understanding and definition of fashion is even scarier.

Q: How would you define your personal style?

My personal style is very sophisticated and elegant, I love to dress chick by day and glamorous by night.

Cleo Miami

Cleo Miami

Q: Where are you based?

I am currently based in Central London, Zone 1.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Thetravelling has been a lot of fun whether it is across England or in Europe. I would have to say the highlight would be meeting creative open-minded people in the industry. These people are not scared to express their selves and have a lot of ambition to get to where they want to be in life, regardless of the obstacles they face. I like to surround myself with people whom I aspire to be like.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve over the next 12 months?

I am looking to shoot more magazine submissions and have my agency up and running.

Q: What do you do to relax?

I usually take around a week off, every two to three months and spend this time with my family. I am the eldest of eight children and it gives me a lot of motivation being around them.

Q: Where would your favorite holiday (vacation) be and why?

In the Maldives as its very beautiful and peaceful.

Q: What songs are on your iPod at the moment?

Garage, Reggae, DnB, Dub Step, House and Rap. Latest and old school tunes.

Q: What motivates you to do what you do?

My family.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know?

Never stop believing in yourself. If your feeling you need a dramatic change in life read about The Secret, it will help you understand about life and most importantly about yourself.

Cleo Miami

Cleo Miami

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring models what would it be?

There is a common misconception within the industry, that you have to be super skinny, super tall and super sexy to become a model. This is simply not true.

If you look at hundreds of different TV commercials, magazine ads, billboards, you will see that every different kind of look is being used in advertising. The truth is, that advertisers need to target every different groups of people in our society and you are a part of our vast society as well.

There are people that like the same things as you and that think, dress and look similar to you too. These are whom you will market the best to and especially now days the variety in models is a huge demand for normal average looking people. You can be size 0 to a size 22 it really doesn’t matter.

Just the other day, I was informed of a casting for a top designer looking for a fitting model. The client specifically stated that the model must be a size 20 in real life and that she wasn’t looking for someone who had looks of a model.

And of course there is always work for people who are naturally… sexy.

(*Note: Sexy is not so much a look, as it is a personality!)

Editor’s Note: Cleo Miami has an extremely versatile, alluring look that is suited to a variety of commercial modeling scenarios. Definitely one of Urbanity Chic’s “Ones to Watch”.

Lara Jade Coton, Sky Ferreira, Joe Wright, Karl Lagerfeld, Nirrimi Firebrace, Mario Testino, Gemma Ward, Annie Leibovitz, Anna Wintour, Lana Del Rey, Margret Mitchell, Eddie Redmayne, Steven Meisel, Jonathan Lawson, Sofia Coppola, Nikki Reed, Sasha Pivovarova and Nicole Bently amongst so many others.

Q: Which modern day fashion designers or fashion icons do you look up to?

Mary Kate Olsen, Olivia Palermo, Abbey Lee Kershaw.

Q: Do you prefer using film cameras or digital?

We love both. We use digital on shoots due to convenience but film when we’re experimenting.

Q: Do you prefer to shoot on location or in the studio?

On location.

Q: Do you have any interesting stories about a particular photo shoot you’d like to share?

We’ve had so many! We’ve had a model throw a thousand dollar bracelet onto a highway, been escorted to security offices, chased by wild geese, had the power switched off on us, lost our shoes in muddy swamps, frozen in graveyards, scared off snakes, dived into a field to avoid being caught while trespassing, cried our way out of a $600 fine, had nine models in underwear running around a public beach and all the while enduring whatever teenage boys are around to jeer at our models.

Q: Do you have a specific style of photography that makes you unique?

We are quite feminine and vulnerable with our photos but we are still developing and are always trying different concepts. One thing you can expect from us is clear, soft images with emphasis on distinct details.

Q: Do you have a favourite photograph?

It is impossible to choose. We are dissatisfied with so much of our work due to high standards but appreciate elements of each photograph. Usually our favorites are influenced by memories or content rather than the actual photograph.

Q: Who is your favourite photographer?

Each other.

Ivy Nine Designs

Ivy Nine Designs

Ivy Nine Designs

Q: Is there anybody you would like to work with (either behind or in front of the camera)?

Yes, hundreds of people! When we put a team together we only consider talent that we admire and find inspirational. There are so many more amazing people filling the world and we look forward to working with them in the future.

Q: What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion is the opportunity to have fun and express all different facets of your personality. It’s great because it’s so dynamic and you don’t always have to be the same.

Q: How would you define your personal style?

Always changing. We are quite different actually, right now Bekha is into high collars, long jackets and sheer fabrics while Jess is wearing woolen jumpers, tribal patterns and moccasins. We both love felt hats, leather boots, shoulder bags and embellished shirts. We have a common taste for clean simple lines with splashes of color and impeccable fits.

Q: Where are you based?

Gold Coast, Australia.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

A little frustrating. We’re tired of beaches and commercial developments and long to be in a fashion area such as Sydney or New York. After we travel through Europe next month we’ll decide on a place to relocate.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Achieving the personal goals we set step by step.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in the future?

We want to be commissioned editorial photographers for print fashion magazines here in Australia and internationally. We look forward to combining our work with travelling around the world and meeting new people.

Ivy Nine Designs

Ivy Nine Designs

Ivy Nine Designs

Q: What do you do to relax?

We take photos of each other, our life and family, we write and play music together on the guitar and piano. Occasionally we watch a fantasy series, sometimes we cook, often we find ourselves retouching photos as a form of relaxation.

Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?

Anywhere we haven’t been yet.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

We collect CDs to listen to and the most recent purchases have been…

Bekha -- Marina and the Diamonds, Lisa Mitchell, Bon Iver and Birdy.

Jess -- First Aid Kit, Ed Sheeran, Karis Eden and Florence and the Machine.

Q: Do you have any interesting hobbies?

We love going on road trips and we love vintage shopping for clothes, books and props. We love blogging as well as taking film photos. Also Jess is currently doing a 365 challenge (photo a day project) which keeps her photographically active.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for aspiring photographers what would it be?

The best advice for any profession is to know your craft well and develop your skills to the point of being the best. So practice, practice, practice. That’s what we do.

Q: What motivates you to do what you do?

The idea of achieving better things with our photography, getting to that level where we are proud of our work and can clearly communicate our ideas.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

We have a store opening shortly and will be blogging throughout Europe, feel free to follow our journey.

MUA Silvia Saccinto

MUA Silvia Saccinto

Q: What are you currently working on?

I’m currently working in a Photographic Studio, Milk+ and La Mode Modeling Agency. I’m also waiting for a confirmation for a potential Music Video in Lincolnshire. Also, I recently worked for the new collection of Max C London and Demur Magazine.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

Busy! With a lot of stress but at the same time a lot of satisfaction about my experience in make up. Also because as you can see from my last answer, I’m working in different departments from photoshoots, to magazines, to films etc.

Q: What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion for me is a representation of a single concept: the aesthetic. It  is always evolving in colours, forms and language.

It is a  universal experience , as an expression of the body that create an image, transforming it into its own individuality.

Q: Which modern day fashion designers or fashion icons do you look up to?

Fashion needs technology and freedom, transgression and poetry. This looks like art. As  everything  needs a linguistic innovation that its  going forward. “Innovation” that clearly we can find in  Roberto Cavalli, Giorgio Armani, are the symbols of a strong and aggressive woman ready for every situation.
As a reference point to my ideas I can say that also  Gucci , Louis Vuitton and Chanel, exalt the idea of woman seen from many different angles through the illusion of the mirror always expressing their own safety.
Finally fashion create a language that gives an image of the woman with a strong personality, used to make decisions or responsibility in a context where the social is very varied.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration?

My inspirations are common life, advertisements, magazines, movies etc..
The woman of today wants to be herself, naturally safe and to emphasize her social identity. Fashion is not just aimed at cancelled imperfections or improve the visual aspect, but also (this is my opinion) an expression of self, the inner part of each of us to turn this around people and realize their own inspirations.

Karolina Elizabeta -- MUA Silvia Saccinto

MUA Silvia Saccinto

Q: Who inspires you?

The comparison with the reality of every day where I try to generates creativity, and an image of it.

Q: What’s your favourite makeup product that you are never without on a shoot?

Well a few. I love Chanel Foundation and I don t know what I can do without it!!!

I’m also using MAC:foundation, fixer and pigment eyeshadow, Laura Mercier foundation, Make Up Forever Foundation and concealer base, eyeshadow and Make Up Store primer and pigment.

Q: What is the skin prep process prior to makeup?

Well it depends according to the type of skin, but usually I start to clean the skin with some baby wipes. If the skin is sensitive then I use some oil. After that I start to moisturize the skin with two creams.

After the hydration I sometimes use a Toner to prepare the skin for the foundation but it depends. I quite often use a primer and I find it much better because it gives the skin a kind of healthy-looking radiance! Then before the foundation, but only if I need to, I use a fixer (such as Mac Fixer) that  helps to keep the make up stay for longer than normal…
After I finish this, I start with the foundation and so on….

Q: How would you define your personal style?

I try to have style. I like to be creative and experiment with new styles. Sometimes I practice with objects, accessories, as well, but most of the time it’s crazy and original with a piece of me in it!

Q: Where are you based?

I’m based in London but I would like to travel for work. Honestly it would be one of my dreams…maybe one day!

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

Sometimes it is difficult with the language. It still happens when I’m too tired to understand someone talking but I keep trying to do my best and I think I have made a lot of progress.

MUA Silvia Saccinto

MUA Silvia Saccinto

Q: How would you define your city’s fashion?

Well I come from Rome and honestly there’s everything there and its beautiful but it doesn’t have much to do with fashion compared to London! I used to travel to Milan as well for work but the only two cities that for me represent Fashion itself are Paris and London.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

The highlight of my career was last year. In March 2011, I received a message that changed my work experience completely! I worked for a Short Film(Young Europe) and I hope it will be at cinemas soon. It is about three beautiful cities: Rome, Paris and Dublin. We won awards for the film in two festivals, one in Italy (Milan)and the second in Dublin and the film also won awards for the best director and actress! It made me so proud of myself because finally something changed in my life and recognized my professional work.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve over the next 12 months?

A lot of things! Well the most important is to try to work in a famous magazine!

Secondly, I would like to be able to try to travel for work!

Thirdly, I hope to find a good position as an assistant of a famous make up artist to try to develop my professional skills!

Q: What do you do to relax?

Watching TV series such as Game of Thrones, The Vampire Diaries, and True Blood etc.
Also I like watching movies and going out with friends!

And… going to gym!

MUA Silvia Saccinto

MUA Silvia Saccinto

Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?

I always like to come back home to my city! See my family and friends but I love everywhere that I can have the sea, a beach and a sunbath! I like Sardinia and all the south coast of Italy!

Why? Because there is nothing better than a beach with a cocktail in your hand!

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

Different songs everyday but my favourite music is more or less dance. I love house music!

Q: Do you have interesting hobbies?

Not particularly but I love shopping!

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

The only thing I would like to say is: Follow your dreams!

Sometimes it is hard. Sometimes it’s easy but at the end of the day you can always say: I’ have tried! This is important!

Q: What is the most important beauty advice that you can give to women?

Make Up is not only for common use; it is also a piece of art. It is not only meant to be used only for beauty but also is the expression of the body .It projects an image, an individuality, it doesn’t matter which social class or skin color you are but it is the inner beauty that we can find in our soul.

Q: What motivates you to do what you do?

In first place there is my Mum, she has always supported my dreams
But also my own determination to finish what I’ve started until the end!!!
