Spotlight Interview – Fashion MUA Silvia Saccinto

Silvia Saccinto is an Italian makeup artist who is currently working and living in London. The last 12 months have been really eventful for Silvia and we were delighted, despite her schedule that she agreed to be interviewed by Urbanity Chic. Read on to find out about Silvia’s thoughts on modern fashion designers, London’s fashion scene and what makeup products she can’t live without.

MUA Silvia Saccinto

MUA Silvia Saccinto

Q: What are you currently working on?

I’m currently working in a Photographic Studio, Milk+ and La Mode Modeling Agency. I’m also waiting for a confirmation for a potential Music Video in Lincolnshire. Also, I recently worked for the new collection of Max C London and Demur Magazine.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

Busy! With a lot of stress but at the same time a lot of satisfaction about my experience in make up. Also because as you can see from my last answer, I’m working in different departments from photoshoots, to magazines, to films etc.

Q: What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion for me is a representation of a single concept: the aesthetic. It  is always evolving in colours, forms and language.

It is a  universal experience , as an expression of the body that create an image, transforming it into its own individuality.

Q: Which modern day fashion designers or fashion icons do you look up to?

Fashion needs technology and freedom, transgression and poetry. This looks like art. As  everything  needs a linguistic innovation that its  going forward. “Innovation” that clearly we can find in  Roberto Cavalli, Giorgio Armani, are the symbols of a strong and aggressive woman ready for every situation.
As a reference point to my ideas I can say that also  Gucci , Louis Vuitton and Chanel, exalt the idea of woman seen from many different angles through the illusion of the mirror always expressing their own safety.
Finally fashion create a language that gives an image of the woman with a strong personality, used to make decisions or responsibility in a context where the social is very varied.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration?

My inspirations are common life, advertisements, magazines, movies etc..
The woman of today wants to be herself, naturally safe and to emphasize her social identity. Fashion is not just aimed at cancelled imperfections or improve the visual aspect, but also (this is my opinion) an expression of self, the inner part of each of us to turn this around people and realize their own inspirations.

Karolina Elizabeta -- MUA Silvia Saccinto

MUA Silvia Saccinto

Q: Who inspires you?

The comparison with the reality of every day where I try to generates creativity, and an image of it.

Q: What’s your favourite makeup product that you are never without on a shoot?

Well a few. I love Chanel Foundation and I don t know what I can do without it!!!

I’m also using MAC:foundation, fixer and pigment eyeshadow, Laura Mercier foundation, Make Up Forever Foundation and concealer base, eyeshadow and Make Up Store primer and pigment.

Q: What is the skin prep process prior to makeup?

Well it depends according to the type of skin, but usually I start to clean the skin with some baby wipes. If the skin is sensitive then I use some oil. After that I start to moisturize the skin with two creams.

After the hydration I sometimes use a Toner to prepare the skin for the foundation but it depends. I quite often use a primer and I find it much better because it gives the skin a kind of healthy-looking radiance! Then before the foundation, but only if I need to, I use a fixer (such as Mac Fixer) that  helps to keep the make up stay for longer than normal…
After I finish this, I start with the foundation and so on….

Q: How would you define your personal style?

I try to have style. I like to be creative and experiment with new styles. Sometimes I practice with objects, accessories, as well, but most of the time it’s crazy and original with a piece of me in it!

Q: Where are you based?

I’m based in London but I would like to travel for work. Honestly it would be one of my dreams…maybe one day!

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

Sometimes it is difficult with the language. It still happens when I’m too tired to understand someone talking but I keep trying to do my best and I think I have made a lot of progress.

MUA Silvia Saccinto

MUA Silvia Saccinto

Q: How would you define your city’s fashion?

Well I come from Rome and honestly there’s everything there and its beautiful but it doesn’t have much to do with fashion compared to London! I used to travel to Milan as well for work but the only two cities that for me represent Fashion itself are Paris and London.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

The highlight of my career was last year. In March 2011, I received a message that changed my work experience completely! I worked for a Short Film(Young Europe) and I hope it will be at cinemas soon. It is about three beautiful cities: Rome, Paris and Dublin. We won awards for the film in two festivals, one in Italy (Milan)and the second in Dublin and the film also won awards for the best director and actress! It made me so proud of myself because finally something changed in my life and recognized my professional work.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve over the next 12 months?

A lot of things! Well the most important is to try to work in a famous magazine!

Secondly, I would like to be able to try to travel for work!

Thirdly, I hope to find a good position as an assistant of a famous make up artist to try to develop my professional skills!

Q: What do you do to relax?

Watching TV series such as Game of Thrones, The Vampire Diaries, and True Blood etc.
Also I like watching movies and going out with friends!

And… going to gym!

MUA Silvia Saccinto

MUA Silvia Saccinto

Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?

I always like to come back home to my city! See my family and friends but I love everywhere that I can have the sea, a beach and a sunbath! I like Sardinia and all the south coast of Italy!

Why? Because there is nothing better than a beach with a cocktail in your hand!

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

Different songs everyday but my favourite music is more or less dance. I love house music!

Q: Do you have interesting hobbies?

Not particularly but I love shopping!

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

The only thing I would like to say is: Follow your dreams!

Sometimes it is hard. Sometimes it’s easy but at the end of the day you can always say: I’ have tried! This is important!

Q: What is the most important beauty advice that you can give to women?

Make Up is not only for common use; it is also a piece of art. It is not only meant to be used only for beauty but also is the expression of the body .It projects an image, an individuality, it doesn’t matter which social class or skin color you are but it is the inner beauty that we can find in our soul.

Q: What motivates you to do what you do?

In first place there is my Mum, she has always supported my dreams
But also my own determination to finish what I’ve started until the end!!!

Q: How has the last 12 months been for you?

Within the last 12 months I have basically been building up my name and business in the industry.

Q: Who inspires you?

I am very inspired but simply creating something new that hasn’t been done before or may be a little shocking. This may not necessarily be something fashionable or beautiful. Usually I will take inspiration from everything around me, personal experiences and feelings. It will give me an idea that I can’t stop thinking about and I have to create something!

Q: Which modern day fashion designers or fashion icons do you look up to?
Versace is a personal favorite of mine as I feel they always have been a leader in the industry and they are always bringing something new with keeping a little bit of Gianni’s original flavour.

Q: Who is your favourite photographer?

I love anything my David LaChapelle.

Q: Is there anybody you would like to work with?

I would love the chance to one day have my work featured in Vogue magazine as I feel that it would be the highest honor possible in makeup artistry.

MUA -- Simon Bull

Q: What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion to me is creating and setting trends. Not following trends.

Q: How would you define your personal style?

My own personal style would have to be a mixture of bright colours and a lot of white.

As a creative person, what are some other creative things you like to do?

I am really always creating something, I sometimes paint, make or alter clothing, make jewellery, and I also enjoy interior design. Give me anything creative and I will enjoy it.

Do you see yourself someday creating your own line of makeup?

Definitely having been trained in beauty related science a cosmetic chemistry this is definitely something I am interested in.

What is the most important beauty advice that you can give to women?

The best advice I can give women and anyone for that matter is to simply take an extra 5 minutes in the morning getting ready, everybody has the time its just a matter of having a bit of pride in your appearance and being on the right track to self confidence and feeling great.

Another thing would be to not follow the trends of what everyone else is doing, create something interesting for yourself.

MUA -- Simon Bull

What’s your favourite makeup product that you are never without on a shoot?

My absolute favorite that I use on every single photo shoot is actually quite cheap! It’s from the face shop from the colour nuance range and it is their highlighter shimmer shadow. This is great to highlight the high points of your face like your cheekbones and browbone, also it will give an all around healthy glow.

What is the skin prep process prior to makeup?

Having a great makeup look has to begin with a great blank canvass so keeping your skin healthy with regular exfoliating and hydrating masks creates a smooth surface to create a strong base to makeup. Before I apply I like to use a foundation and eye shadow primer to assure I have a lasting application.

Q: Where are you based?

Melbourne, Victoria.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

I love Melbourne because I truly believe it is the fashion capital of Australia and I feel like there is a lot of opportunity in my industry here.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Simply being recognized for my talents and gaining respect for this.

I am hoping to grow Simon Bull Makeup Artistry (SBMA) into a well known name and I aim to open a Studio in a few years time in which I will perform classes and perform makeup and hair for clients, photo shoots, consultations etc.

I always put 110% into everything I do and believe that in the future the hard work begin to show great rewards and advantages.

Q: What do you do to relax?

I am not a very relaxed person because usually I like to always be doing something, however when it does come the time to wind down I like to get away somewhere quiet and take some time just for me and occasionally live without working.

Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?

I am dreaming of a day when I can head to Bora Bora and lie on the pure white sands looking at the turquoise water, it looks really beautiful there.

Q: How did you get into professional makeup artistry?

I first stared doing makeup on my friends and family, just for fun.

Then in 2009 I was flicking through a Dolly magazine and seen an add for the Napoleon Perdis Academy, so I called the number and they suggested I do the Summer glam camp to see if this was for me. A month had past and it was the day of the course, as soon as I entered the doors to the academy I knew this is how I wanted to make a career. Which was over four year’s ago; I then got in contact with an aspiring photographer in my local area to help me with my portfolio.

At only 17 I started up my business -- Tara Hoggan Make Up Artist.

Beginning by taking on small clients, I was soon able to demonstrate a strong understanding of how to develop the commercial side of the business to adequately deal with the high demand of my work.

Q: What do you enjoy most about makeup?

Being able to create something unique and share it with the people that share the same passion as me.

Q: How has the last 12 months been for you?

The last twelve months has been amazing and I as a makeup artist have evolved drastically, I have met so many unique and creative people.

I have experienced a whole different aspect of the fashion industry; I have learnt an invaluable lesson in becoming a team player for example, working with hairdressers, photographers, and fashionistas.

Combining our talents for a creative collaboration.

Q: Who inspires you?

Napoleon Perdis, also colours, textures and nature around me inspire the way I create a new look.

Q: Which modern day fashion designers or fashion icons do you look up to?

I love the designs of Nicky Zimmermann, Alannah Hill and Vera Wang.

Q: What makes a good make up artist in your opinion?

A make up artist that strives for perfection that drags your imagination into another world.

That makes you really fall in love with their artwork and enjoy every aspect of the piece.

Q: Do you have any interesting stories about a particular photo shoot you’d like to share?

Oh yes I sure do! The night before my first paid shoot, I was really nervous and didn’t sleep so I stayed up cleaning my brushes and organising my makeup kit.

We started hair and makeup at 4am when the rain decided to play havoc with us, as the photoshoot was meant to be held in a gorgeous park nearby, the photographer and designer had to make other plans.

Once hair and makeup were all done the sun decided to be generous and come out, so we went back to the original plan, after that, the day was a success with people driving past just to get a glimpse of the action.

As we were up to our last look for the day the rain clouds started rolling in, so everyone rushed around the park collecting extension leads and our props before the rain set in, as the last model ran under the bbq shelter the rain poured down!

Needless to say our Neverland Fantasy Shoot was a great success and the beginning of my new career.

Australia, I’ve lived here all my life and I still have not seen all our beautiful landmarks, beaches and rainforests. There’s so much to discover and see before venturing out into the world.

Q: What music are you listening to at the moment?

At the moment I’m in love with some music from local djs, Well butchered & The Darkside -S4 Break in mix tape.

Q: Do you have any interesting hobbies?

When I have spare time I like to go fishing and snorkeling with my fiancé.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for aspiring makeup artists what would it be?

Never give up on your dreams, always dream big.

Q: What motivates you to do what you do?

My amazing fiancé.

Editor’s Note: Tara Hoggan has an incredible creative and sensitive style in Make Up but also an attention to detail that ensures that all of her work has a signature look but also embodies a commercial edge.
