Q: How did you get into fashion?

I knew from a young age I wanted to be in fashion and people always made a judgment on my fashion whether good or bad as it stood out. After finding out about the fantastic degree at the University of Brighton with an experience year and business studies built in I went full on for my career. I trained in printed textiles and designed in New York which I loved, however it was there I really fell in love with styling. After graduating I started freelance styling and built my contacts and knowledge from there.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

A whirlwind! I went from part time styling and working full time in corporate events and production to a full time stylist with a studio. This time last year I was working on National Roadshows to bring in money and small-scale shoots for my fashion. This year I did full production for an On Schedule London Fashion Week Runway for fabulous designer Haizhen Wang and an International Designer Showcase event with bloody Gray held at Somerset House. I also made my solo production and styling debut holding an event just after SS13 LFW last year in October which was a great success.

Q. What inspired you to start working in the fashion industry?

I love colour, being creative and individualistic. I love fabric and felt I had a keen eye to pick out pieces that others couldn’t in the shops.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration?

All over the place! There is no box and it is best to think outside it. My travels, favourite designers, creative editorials, theatre and exhibitions all greatly influence me.

Q: Which modern day fashion designers or fashion icons do you look up to?

From a young age I idolized Zandra Rhodes and Vivienne Westwood for their outrageousness to be different with no bounds in colour, media and pattern. I was also a massive fan of Alexander McQueen and continue to like the brand with designer Sarah Burton. Further afield I love Betsey Johnson and DVF!

Q: Who is your favourite photographer?

I like the works of Tim Walker who has a real imaginative child at heart. The props, composition, theming and setting of his photographs are wonderful. I also like the fact he is very vocal in directing when shooting which I think is essential to get the best shot and connect with the models or subject involved.

Q: Is there anybody you would like to work with?

I would love to work with many people, ultimately my relationships with my creatives and designers are most important to me. A great vibe on set and a team that is willing to go the extra mile to get that shot is what I look for. I work with a lot of emerging designers that are amazingly talented and hope to continue working with them on their journey. I will always work with emerging designers, as I believe they are key to understanding the future of fashion and helping them grow on their journey. I also feel like this allows me to give back to the industry. Big names I would love to work with Nick Knight & ELLE.

Q Who are your ‘Ones To Watch?’

Ones to support & watch that I love are Haizhen Wang, James Hock, Jane Bowler & Barbara Allan -- all individual in their own right at cutting edge fashion.

Q: What does fashion mean to you?

It is what I have fun with, it is what I live in but I try not to take it too seriously. I do a job I love that I have worked hard for. The world of fashion often crosses with my personal life as no hour is off limits but I make sure I have other interests and social groups to keep me well balanced. This also helps with inspirations.

Q: How would you define your personal style?

Eclectic, a chameleon – sometimes I am outrageous and other times I am casual and understated. My style is not perfect and it’s not meant to be, it’s just me. I would say a favourite is a boho rock chic – think casual locks, long skirts and leather. I love my vintage pieces.

Q: Where are you based?

I am from and based in Brentwood, Essex but I commute to London every day. I have a studio at London Bridge where I prep for shoots and manage admin. I am currently working with Bloody Gray on production for the new season press days.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Catwalk Production, Press & backstage management for Haizhen Wang with Bloody Gray. It was very exciting and a great success. My event last year was also a great success and launched my name into the industry. It was a real challenge that was very demanding but the results in attendance, styling, production and post media was very rewarding, which made me very proud.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve over the next 12 months?

This time next year I hope to have produced further runway shows, travelled internationally for styling and hold a fashion job at a top monthly editorial. I have high hopes and dreams and I don’t know the specific journey but I believe I will get there and achieve them.

Q: What do you do to relax?

I love a good film whether at home, at the cinema or at a pop up rooftop or drive through. I love the drama, the costumes and the emotion in a film. I also like to stay fit with dance, running and Pilates.

Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?

My ideal vacation would be a combination of beach, adventure and culture – I think Thailand is great for this although I do like to try new places. I would love to visit Egypt and India.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

I love up beat songs – especially first thing in the morning. Right now I am loving New York City indie rock band Fun. I also love Two Door Cinema Club, Haim, Everything Everything, Rhye & Tom Odell. All time favourites Daft Punk & Justice.

Q: Do you have interesting hobbies?

I love to sing and dance. I love to attend many festivals and become a real music and camping head getting involved with everything I can. I also like to write lyrics.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for people wanting to work in the fashion industry what would it be?

If you want to do it, do it, no matter the sacrifice. I’m a believer of if you really go for it you will be successful. Follow the success and don’t get confused by others around you, stay focused. My friends and family have been very supportive of my career situations and choices and I would not be doing what I am today without them.

Q: How can you see your work in fashion developing into the future?

I aim to develop my styling on an international level and want to become an editor of a top monthly fashion magazine.

Q: What motivates you to do what you do?

It sounds cheesy but life. You only get one and I think you should aim high and give it your all. Ultimately fashion makes me happy.

Q: How did you get into fashion modeling?

I got into modelling for first time, when I was about 16 and was approached on the street by an agent, who wanted me to join her agency. I have done quite a few fashion shows with them and although I enjoyed modelling, decided to focus on my education and after going to university, dropped the modelling for couple of years. After finishing my degree and moving to London later on, I realised I want to give the modelling another go and see where it can take me.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

I had an incredible year, managed to build up my portfolio, to work with very talented photographers, to take part in a number of fashion shows, photo shoots, music videos and a commercial too.

Q. Who inspires you?

I love all the supermodels from the 90′s -- Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Elle Macpherson, who all seem to have stopped the time and carry on looking even more incredible.

Which modern day fashion designers or fashion icons do you look up to?

Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood for their creativity and inspiration.

Q. Do you prefer to shoot on location or studio?

I enjoy both, but studio is more controlled in terms of lighting, so might work better in a way.

Q. How do you prepare for a fashion shoot or show?

I just make sure I have exercised during the day and I have a good rest and plenty of sleep the night before.

Q: Do you have a favourite photograph?

Not really, it is difficult to pick just one.

My style changes and depends from the way I feel. I love feminine and sexy dresses, but also skinny jeans and simple tops, combined with leather jackets.

Q: How did you get into professional photography?

It took me a while to realise that Photography was my calling. With the luxury of hindsight I see it was always there, from a very young age I used to give my mum makeovers and photograph her. But, that’s hindsight I didn’t have at the time, so I took the round about route to becoming a Photographer…

I left school at 17yrs, completed a Pitman’s secretarial course and began working as a Secretary. Aged 18yrs I traveled alone to Sydney and lived there for a year, which is when I remember buying my first Photography textbook and starting serious self-study.

Returning back to London I put myself through several photographic & retouching courses including a 2 year photography evening course, while continuing to work full time as a secretary/PA in Architectural Offices. After the Photography NC course finished, I found an advert looking for a jogging partner, placed by a Photographer. I did not know what type of Photographer, but I figured we’d have something in common to chat about as we jogged, so I took a leap of faith. I’m so glad I did as, by the end of the first job, I had been offered a Photographer’s Assistant job with what turned out to be an established Fashion Photographer. Serendipity! I assisted him for a year and a half, which gave me a much clearer understanding of the industry. I decided to embrace the freelance world full-time in January 2007.

In June 2009 I purchased a photographic Studio / Location in Upper Clapton, Hackney, East London. I shoot in the Studio / Location myself and also hire it to other creatives. Location Hire clients include Marks & Spencer’s, Living Etc. Magazine, FHM Magazine and more. In December 2011 I expanded into a larger 1,636sqft Studio/Location just next door (www.studioandlocationhire.com).

Q: What do you enjoy most photographing?

I most enjoy shooting fashion Designer’s collections, fashion editorials & celebrities. I love carefully selecting the team for the project depending on their strengths and what we are looking to achieve, bringing together a creative team together to translate a vision of the collection into a reality for all to see.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

Great. This year I’ve really enjoyed working on providing all the photography for an encyclopedic book, as well as working with magazine publishers, including shooting for Hello! Magazine.

I’ve been plugging away at my photographic work for years and it feels like this year it’s finally getting displayed and noticed in the way that I’ve hoped. :-)

On a personal note, it has been difficult. This year marked 5yrs since my mum passed away from cancer, but I feel like this last quarter of the year things have turned a corner and I’m super positive about the future.

This year I’ve shied away from partying and instead focused on knowledge and self awareness: asking myself exactly where I want to be and what I want to be doing with my life (I spent months looking at moving to various countries abroad). I’ve been self-studying more photographic and business ideas, becoming more open and interested in world affairs and looking at what it is to be alive and renewed -- what is important to me and how I want to direct my life. I won’t say it’s all been rosy, but I feel this year’s given me clarity for the future. I see my path; I just need to keep walking it. Already I feel it’s had a massively positive difference in my work and I’m now getting far more attention than before and am gaining ground on working with more of the clients that I’ve been focusing my attentions towards working with: more Designers, Magazines, Retailers, PR’s and loving it!

Q: Who inspires you?

I take inspiration out of my everyday life (TV, magazines, browsing the net, dreams and conversations, colours/shapes/materials – anything that catches my eye in life really). I have a folder marked ‘Ideas’ on my desktop, which I add to almost every day, as well as tearing pages out of magazines to keep -- if an element of the image inspires me (the lighting/pose/composition/angle/postproduction).

Q: Which modern day fashion designers or fashion icons do you look up to?

I have great respect for anyone who makes a successful business utilizing and honing their creative gift and entrepreneurial skills.

There isn’t a particular Fashion Designer or Icon that I look up to. I’ve never been one to chase labels. To me it is more about style, colour, shape, feel, and finish.

I respect the longevity and scale of Kate Moss’s modeling career (I wonder if it would have been this long if Photoshop didn’t exist?). Also, Kylie Minogue and Madonna’s careers -- not that I really listen to their music, more the way they change with the times to stay relevant and look forward – that’s what I want for my life & photographic work, to keep moving forward. As Bob Dylan says ‘an artist is always in a state of becoming’, which resonates with my core believes.

Vogue Magazine has always been a distant star that I have been slowly pushing my way towards. For some reason, I guess I’ll feel like I’ve truly ‘made it’ when I get an editorial fashion/celebrity spread in Vogue. J But I’m sure by then I’ll have my eye’s on another prize – perhaps my own magazine, or becoming a DOP, or still shooting but shooting for someone/thing else then.

Recently I watch the movie Invictus about Nelson Mandela, and watched an interview online with Richard Branson. Two wonderfully perceptive and inspiring icons that this world needs more of! Their positive refreshing attitudes, striving to achieve great positive change for the world (like protecting sea life), and striving to defuse tense political situations in combination with the other Elders, is wonderful.

What has Richard Branson got to do with fashion? Nothing that I know of, however he makes a point of donating to charities and supporting people worldwide – and that is something any person can and should do. We are seeing a lot more sustainable fashion flood into the British fashion scene; we need more of that too! Ask me again in a few years – perhaps I’ll just name a wonderful high-end sustainable fashion designer’s work as my Icon.

Although my work has been quite commercial of late, I do love the fantasy world of fashion sculptural Designers, like Gareth Pugh and Pam Hogg – visual splendors & break from the norm.

Q: What makes a good photographer in your opinion?

Tough question, I guess anyone can take a good photograph, but a good photographer has the skill, artistic eye, technical knowledge (of the right equipment to use for the specific shot brief circumstanced) to be able to consistently get the right shots needed in any situation.

As I’m a Photographer & Retoucher, to me image capture is one part of the process. From there I extrapolate and build upon that RAW image data, retouching the image. If you’d like to hear me waffle more on my thoughts/workflow for postproduction/retouching check out www.margaretyescombe.com/retouching ;-)

What makes good Fashion photography? To me it is all about visual impact. Great fashion photography is all about pulling together the right creative team (be it small or large) to translate the vision you have in your head into a series of stunning, beautiful photographs.

Q: Do you prefer using film cameras or digital?

I originally learnt on film, and even had my own little darkroom set up in the garden shed (which I later found out had an asbestos roof – doh!) where I’d develop my own black and white photos, dodging and burning light in the photos (that’s something that I now do in digital).

When I went into digital I lapped up what could be done, instantly seeing photos and making adjustments then shooting more, which was a great way of working for me. I also lapped up what could be done in postproduction/retouching, and from then onwards was always a Photographer & Retoucher -- and one who would never release raw files.

Q: Do you prefer to shoot on location or in the studio?

I’m in the fortunate position to own a Studio/Location in Hackney, East London (www.studioandlocationhire.com), so most of my work is Studio based – that is great, as I don’t have to commute.

I also love shooting at interesting/luxury locations. This year I covered a fashion design presentation down at Saville Row, so it was great to see behind the scenes there and chat to the owner/head tailor and designers.

I’d love to work with clients that want their collections/advertising shots done on location a sunny beach somewhere, or in NYC, Paris, … -- hint hint ;-)

Q: Do you have any interesting stories about a particular photo shoot you’d like to share?

I’ve had the pleasure to photograph both Michael Palin, and Terry Jones, and the art in their homes – I really enjoyed meeting them both. Terry Jones, has a ‘photo-face’ that he always pulls (like my brother), I took that shot, but I wanted more, I squatted down close to the floor to get him from a different angle – he asked me if I was taking a picture of his knees & we both laughed – I captured him with a natural happy face. I like the image so much at the time, that I printed/framed a copy for him and posted it to Terry Jones as a little present. Next think I knew, his PA got in contact asking if they could use it for his fan photo/PR – I was of course honored and happy to oblige!

Q: Do you have a specific style of photography that makes you unique?

I find it hard to describe my own work – I work better visually then with words.

If you pushed me, I’d prob just say something like ‘clean, crisp and well lit’ in a bid to get past this question and onto the next. :-)

Q: Do you have a favourite photograph?

I have many favourite fashion photographs; some stay in my Inspiration Folder for years, some get deleted/replaced as my taste evolves, or if I’ve shot something and used up the inspiration from that image.

Actually the images that come to mind are of my family. As unfortunately they have become iconic. I gave my mum a studio photo-shoot for her 60th birthday, when she passed away 4 years later her favourite image from that shoot was used on the Order of Service at her funeral. I also had taken my studio kit out to give my grandparents a photo-shoot at their place. Later, again the images where used for each of their Order of Service’s. Those images I took captured my family members happy, full of life – I’m so glad I took the images. They may not be iconic to the world – but they are spoken of being iconic in our world.

Q: Who is your favourite photographer?

No one in particular at the mo, but I admire many in passing. I like the outspokenness of David Bailey, the self confidence of Terry Richardson, the multi career success of Peter Hurley – but I don’t necessarily spent much time looking at their photographic work, I’m more focused on doing my own thing.

Q: Is there anybody you would like to work with (either behind or in front of the camera)?

I’d love to photograph so many people. Basically I’d want to work with people that I want to meet/admire, have a chin wag & a cuppa with, and aim to put a smile on each of their faces as they say that ‘even though they’ve been photographed many, many times throughout their careers – these are their favourite images of themselves’. That’s a gift I’d love to give to them. Of the top of my head I’d start with Arun O’Connor, Kate Moss, Lilly Cole, Bob Dylan, Lenard Cohen, Richard Branson, Anna Wintour, Paul McCartney, (Elvis if he was still alive)…

Q: What does fashion mean to you?

Means an expression of self – we have amazing freedom of expression and so much to choose from.

I went to a strict school where you had to wear the precise uniform right down to the three colours of hairbands you were allowed to wear (and detention if you tried to break free with your scrunchie colours!).

I’ve also traveled around Morocco and know that women must cover their shoulders/cover up more there.

I love the freedom and variety we have here.

How you dress effects how the world sees you. Put a person in a uniform & it takes away their personal freedom and makes them part of a recognizable group.

I remember getting sent home from Girl Guides for wearing a tie-died t-shirt instead of the uniform t-shirt. My point being that it didn’t matter what I wore, I was there to take part in the activities and the social interaction – not the uniform.

Q: How would you define your personal style?

Mostly I live in jeans or leggings, with layers of soft fabric and a scarf, and occasionally with statement jewellery, or pieces of jewellery that mean something to me. I mostly go for comfort & style over the latest trend.

My personal style isn’t necessarily reflected in what I choose to shoot. I want to create aspirational images – looks that wouldn’t necessarily look good on me.

I’ve been told I have a strong sense of fashion/colour and how something should sit to make it attractive and desirable.

Q: Where are you based?

Currently my Studio is in Clapton, Hackney, East London www.studioandlocationhire.com.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

Great, thanks for asking. With so many terrible places you can be born into suffering in this world – I’m glad I was born in London. I love its multicultural diversity and forward-looking attitude. I love that our little island attracts creative people the world over -- a fashion capital of the world, all on my doorstep!

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

There have many highlights to me. Like making my first photographic sale all those years ago, the first time I got published in a magazine, the first time I photographed a celebrity, the first time top fashion model agencies agreed to give me models to test.

Last year I won Professional Photographer Magazine’s ‘Shoot the Catwalk’ competition. I got to meet the editor and representatives from Canon, and was given a VIP pass to shoot at London Fashion Week right at the end of the runway of the Jaeger show, which was great.

Most recently, the first time I’ve photographed for a Hello! Magazine editorial feature.

I guess I just enjoy each step forward on my path.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in the future?

Success / happiness / balance

I’d like to continue to work with more fashion designers, fashion retailers, magazines, PRs, celebrities.

At some point I’d like to go do some fashion shoots in NYC for a while.

Q: What do you do to relax?

I’m a bit of a home bod. Being my own boss and working from home, I find a lot of my work relaxing, like when I’m retouching, I sometimes have the TV on in the background on Discovery Chanel watching documentaries (Gold Rush, Jungle Gold – in fact I’ve watched so many gold prospecting shows I might do it myself one day, ha ha). I also love comedy (30 rock, Seinfeld, Frasier, Curb your Enthusiasm) and action series (Oz, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones) and watching movies on iTunes – this is usually while co-working with my neighbour who is my closest friend.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

I love singing along to just about anything, including adverts. The Nikon and Sky advert are both currently using music by Radical Face ‘Welcome Home’ which I love. Something about it just strikes a deep soft soulful note, and beats with a primal cord with me (as with many others) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8a4iiOnzsc

Q: Do you have any interesting hobbies?

I don’t know if it’s interesting (?) but I’m pretty keen on baking my own bread using the breadmaker my brother gave me (that he bought but never really got into). My Dad has made his own bread every week for as long as I can remember, possibly longer. He only ever made the same one recipe which was unappealing, to me and the rest of the family, as it is hard as a brick, but that’s the way he likes it – so that didn’t really inspire me, ha ha. I love mixing different organic flours, experimenting with the recipes, fresh bread smell is divine! J

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for aspiring photographers what would it be?

Shoot what you love and shoot lots, but also learn the business side of things. Be supportive to others, and let them be support to you. Keep abreast of legal and political issues that are relevant to Photographers (e.g. copyright law) and technological advances that allow you to improve your workflow.

Q: What motivates you to do what you do?

A deep question, or maybe it’s just that my motivation for this dream/drive comes from so deep within, I can’t even see where it stems from. It is a part of me that wants to be realized, and I know now, that if I weren’t to listen to it, I could not live a fulfilled life.

I set myself tasks and personal goals and keep To Do lists with me on my phone -- I try to knock at least one thing off the list a day (often while simultaneously adding to it). I get simple satisfaction crossing things off my list.

Spotlight Interview – Brock Lawson Photography

Brock Lawson is a fashion photographer from Houston, Texas and is our latest StarNow competition winner. When we first saw Brock’s work we were really impressed by his simple yet engaging style of fashion photography and were really keen to interview him for Urbanity Chic so that we could share some of his interest, experiences and impressive portfolio of work with you. Read on to find out, amongst other things, what his career highlights have been, how he would define his personal style and what he’s hoping to achieve for the next 12 months.

Q: Who are you called?

My name is Brock Lawson and I go under the name of Brock Lawson Photography to keep it simple for clients.  Although, just recently I have officially added Amy Wigley to my team as a Photoshoot Coordinator to help relieve some of the planning duties.

Q: How did you get into professional photography?

I received an old .3 megapixel Fuji point and shoot from my father in Junior High.  I started playing with it and moved my way up to a DSLR shortly after.  I worked for a GM car dealership when it went bankrupt and began looking for a different profession.  I began working on the transition to portrait photography and then was drawn into fashion and have been ever since.

Q: What do you enjoy most photographing?

I love shooting fashion.  I prefer breaking rules and shooting it wide angle as well.  I love strobe lighting and use it for all of my images whether in studio or mixing it with ambient outdoors.

Q: How has the last 12 months been for you?

The last 12 months have been pretty good for me.  I began working full time for a fashion retailer as a photographer so personal projects have been slower than the previous year but I feel like I have grown tremendously this year.  I set a goal to become much better at post processing and create a unique style for myself, which I feel I have accomplished.

Brock Lawson Photography

Brock Lawson Photography

Q: Who inspires you?

I wouldn’t say whom but what.  I draw my inspiration from many different places.  I love the fantasy genre and draw lots of inspiration from it.  I also find lots of inspiration in folk music and classic movies.  I have also always been interested by the Victorian period and the wonderful details on their clothing. I like to give my photographs a mysterious edge that keeps the viewers interested in the story behind the photograph.

Q: Which modern day fashion designers or fashion icons do you look up to?

Personally, I am very interested in Tom Ford’s menswear.  I am not a menswear photographer but it fits into my own personal style.  Visually, I am extremely interested in Alexander McQueen’s incredibly detailed pieces.  Also, going back to my love of fantasy and Victorian things, I have been interested in following the collections from China’s Guo Pei.

Q: What makes a good photographer in your opinion?

I love photographers who let their personality show in their work.  Anyone can properly expose a photo and frame good composition but that isn’t what fashion is about.  Fashion is about showing weakness, breaking rules and pushing towards the boundaries of fine art.   I think photographers need to keep this in mind and always remember art is subjective.  Don’t hold back on your visions to conform to the standards.  Always push that line.

Brock Lawson Photography

Brock Lawson Photography

Q: Do you prefer using film cameras or digital?

I feel at home using digital.  I have a few film cameras that I use for street photography and the like but I never share those photos because they don’t fit in with my body of work or the direction I want to go with my career.  I use them more for visual exercises to help with creativity.

Q: Do you prefer to shoot on location or in the studio?

Either works for me.  It really depends on what the concept is for the shoot and what will work best to create the images I desire.

Q: Do you have a specific style of photography that makes you unique?

I think every photographer has a unique style, including myself.  But I don’t think it is something that can really be defined.  Everyone’s vision will always be different from the next person.  I enjoy seeing the outcomes from various photographers at workshops.  It always interests me how even though the set, styling, and model are exactly the same.  Every single person there interprets the scene differently.

Q: Do you have a favourite photograph?

Many!  But currently I am in love with an image by Ruven Afanador of a man and a woman in an garden.  The man has blue tooling tied around his head like a present and the woman has this amazing hair.  The image has a 1920’s English feel to it and it is just gorgeous.  The image is just one from the set but it just strikes a wonderful feeling in me.  You can tell there is a backstory to the set and it really intrigues you to stare at it and figure it out.  If you visit his site, it is slide number 25 under selected works > fashion.

Q: Who is your favourite photographer?

So many to name!  From the old masters it would be have to be Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin, Cecil Beaton and all the other greats.  And some of the more modern ones are, Eugenio Recuenco, Melissa Rodwell, Ruven Afanador to name a few.

Brock Lawson Photography

Brock Lawson Photography

Brock Lawson Photography

Q: Is there anybody you would like to work with (either behind or in front of the camera)?

I would love to work with Melissa Rodwell some day.  Her work has always been inspiring to me and her blog is amazing.  She seems like a great person to be around and I have a feeling I would learn a lot just being at one of her shoots for even an hour.

Q: What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion to be is no limits.  It is artistic expression at its most primal.  Trends come and go but in every piece and collection, the heart and soul of the designer is throughout.  Fashion is also a history book in a sense.  You can look at collections and images from the past and really see what was going on in the world and the general mood of mankind.

Q: How would you define your personal style?

I try not to define it.  I don’t want to ever be stuck doing the same thing over and over so I like to keep it free and open.  I let the themes and stories develop organically to portray just what I was feeling during that moment.

Q: Where are you based?

Houston, TX USA

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

Frustrating at times.  Weather is always a battle.  It is either extremely hot and makeup melts off models faces with in minutes or it is raining.  In my opinion, the general attitude of the industry here is all sorts of messed up.  We have photographers whose egos are big as Texas and models that think Kate Moss should kiss the ground they walk on.  Although I’m sure most locations are like that.  The Houston way is to be selfish; it has always been that way.  I think we could have an amazing fashion scene if people would work together and create a positive environment for us all to thrive in and enjoy.  There is an extreme lack of humbleness by most of the industry here and lots of bark but no bite.    Of course, not everyone is that way.  And to be honest, it is our way of life down here.   It is the way it has always been and always will be.  It wouldn’t be Houston if it was any different.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

I was featured on Italian Vogue’s Photo Vogue as one of the top images of the day.  I have a love for all things Vogue and it was pretty awesome to see my image and name on the main page.

Brock Lawson Photography

Brock Lawson Photography

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in the future?

The near future will be a website update.  Longtime, I’m looking to get more publication work.  There is something so satisfying about seeing your work printed in magazines.  I’m also looking to travel sometime soon and shoot in other countries.

Q: What do you do to relax?

I enjoy watching old and obscure movies.  I also do my fair share of playing video games.  I’m a big car enthusiast as well and try to spend as much time as I can working on cars and just being around motorsports in general.

Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?

I’m not much of a holiday fan but I would love to travel more.  I spent my childhood constantly moving throughout the US and have seen most of what it has to offer.  But I haven’t been overseas at all and want to experience Asia and Europe in the near future.

Q: What songs are on your iPod at the moment?

Way too many to count.  I love music of all varieties and have a 160 GB iPod that is completely full.  But on a daily listen is anything by The Decemberists.  They have been my favorite group for many years and have helped me through rough times.  I am always inspired by all of their tracks and listen to them religiously!

Q: Do you have any interesting hobbies?

I’m a huge car enthusiast.  It is what I went to school for and I made a career out of it for quiet a while.  I work on a blog dedicated to road racing and try to spend as much time as possible immersing myself in the sport.  I have been working on making my own car these past few months ready for the race track and plan on spending some considerable time there this year.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for aspiring photographers what would it be?

Stay humble.  It is my number one pet peeve and I refuse to work with people who think they are the greatest model/stylist/MUA that has ever walked the earth.   No matter what, there is always someone better than you.  And that is a good thing!  It helps you strive to become not only a better photographer, but a better person.  Never ever talk down to fellow photographers or let your ego get in the way.

Q: What motivates you to do what you do?

Personal expression.  Every person sees the world in a different way.  And I think it is nice being able to show other people my own view on life.

Editor’s Note: Brock Lawson has in incredible fashion portfolio that is both appealing simple, dynamic and has incredible commercial appeal. Definitely one of Urbanity Chic’s “Ones to Watch for 2012 and beyond!”

Military Chic Heats Things Up

One of the hottest trends of the year, military chic redefines what it means to look sexy. It sets a whole new standard for women’s fashion, choosing to borrow a little something from the boys. Boyfriend-inspired looks or touches of masculinity amongst women’s clothing trends are nothing new. In fact, women have been borrowing style from men since the 1970’s and 80’s. From blazers to boyfriend jeans, men-inspired women’s fashion has been widespread and each year adopts different influences to integrate into its yearly trends.

Military Chic

What is Military Chic?

Military chic is a term in the fashion world that refers to a number of different military-inspired trends. It has been a constant in the fashion industry; reinventing itself year after year. In recent years, the trend has taken a more subtle approach, primarily borrowing colors from typical army attire to create a military look.

Today, the influences are much more apparent, with edgier remnants of the style evident in staples of the ensemble. Pieces such as combat boots, military jackets, fatigues, and cargo leggings are all used to convey a tough yet chic look, mixing femininity with the rough-and-tumble military world that was once considered only the boys’ domain.

Military Chic

Khaki Style Trousers

Khaki and Camouflage Prints

The British Army introduced the khaki drill uniform around 1857, and its influence is still found amongst women’s clothing in the 21st century today. Khaki trousers are very in vogue, along with the traditional army camouflage pants. Camouflage prints can be found on everything from pants to tank tops, and the colors are not limited to the classic olives, tans, and browns.

Although these shades are still the most common and most versatile in women’s fashion, everything from blues, oranges, and light pinks are used as well. When used in conjunction with camouflage prints, these colors offer brighter, more feminine options for women who prefer to pass on the darker, neutral shades.

Combat Style Boots

Combat-Style Boots

Nothing says “military chic” like a tough pair of combat-style boots. Combat lace-up boots are all the rage, ranging from high heel stiletto styles to classic Doc Martens. Any combat-style boot can be paired over a pair of khaki or camouflage trousers. They are also often worn over jumpsuits inspired by boiler suits, which were commonly worn by soldiers for non-combat work. Slip into a pair of combat boots and match them with an olive green tank and some camouflage leggings, and voila-- you instantly have an ensemble that presents the essence of military chic.

Military Style Denim Jacket

Army-Style Jackets

No military-inspired look is complete without an edgy army-style jacket of some sort. Jackets with fringed epaulettes are particularly in style, but any double breasted style with embellished buttons do the trick. An army jacket will give you just the right touch of military chic on its own, so be careful not to overdo it with too many military-inspired pieces for one ensemble. Whether you’re a tomboy at heart or you like feminine style with an aggressive edge, military chic embodies all of the elements that make a woman feel sexy, confident, and in charge.

Spotlight Interview – Adella Pasos

Adella Pasos is a multi-talented model originally from Chicago but is now spending much of her time working on modeling projects in Miami and Los Angeles too! Despite her increasingly hectic schedule we were delighted that Adella took the time to complete an interview with Urbanity Chic. Read on to discover, amongst other things, what Adella has been working on for the last 12 months, her love of fine art and how she prepares for a fashion shoot.

Q: How did you get into fashion modeling?

My love for fashion, my passion for glamour and makeup, and clothing brands drove me into the modeling field. I love being in the spotlight and the ability to convey emotion in imagery makes me proud of the work I do. My mother was a big influence in my life with keeping me on track with achieving my goals. She actually put me into a modeling school at the tender age of 6. She believed this is what I was meant to do.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

The last 12 months have been exceptional! I’ve had lots of online features, many doors have opened up, and I’ve also had magazine covers! I’m thankful.

Q: Who inspires you?

My mother. She manages to stay humble and meek in all things that she does. She’s very patient with others, and she remains respectful to everyone she comes in contact with. She always strives to exceed all her goals and expectations.

Q: Which modern day fashion designers or fashion icons do you look up to?

Some of my favorite designers would be Dolce and Gabbana, and also Alexander McQueen. Their styles range from sleek, sexy, to bold, abrupt, and loud. I feel fashion should be loved and respectfully displayed in all of those styles. They make fashion ‘cutting edge’.  My favorite models right now would be Miranda Kerr, she’s not just one of the best Victoria’s Secret models, but she consistently diversifies her work. She appears in makeup, perfume, and has walked to runway for top designers as she walked the runway for Christian Dior, Lanvin, and Chanel.

Q: Do you prefer to shoot on location or in the studio?

I prefer a little of both actually. I love the outdoors shoots, they provide a little more variety and color. The studio shoots also have the benefits of special effects and lighting that can work in your benefit as well.

Q: Do you have any interesting stories about a particular photo shoot, or a casting you’d like to share?

My best experience is working with fashion designers. I come from a background where I have a deep appreciation for art and design. Many of these designers put their hearts and soul into creation of their clothing. The produce unique, one-of-a-kind couture pieces, that some even hand sew. I’m very proud to work with those designers to showcase their awesome apparel.

Q: How do you prepare for a fashion shoot or show?

Generally, I start my day off with a protein shake, I exercise, then stretch, take all my vitamins, make sure I have a bottle of water, and a granola snack bar in my purse, my favorite lip gloss, and off I go.

Q: Do you have a favourite photograph?

Yes, my original shoots that I did with the Ford Mustang are my favourite. I love the car, the bikini, and the pictures were amazing!

Q: Who is your favourite photographer?

Currently, the one from my hometown, CS Jackson Photography. He’s doing great work, and continues to move forward in his profession.

Q: Is there anybody you would like to work with?

Not specifically, but I love collaborating with highly creative individuals, and those who are passionate about their work.

Q: What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion means style, different, edgy, smart, sexy, sleek, fun, bright, bold, tiny, and large. It’s an expressive form of art!

Q: How would you define your personal style?

My style would be edgy, sexy, and fun. I love vintage and old looking clothing. As far as color goes, give me bold or subtle, and I will push it to the limit.

Q: Where are you based?

I’m based out of Chicago, born and raised there. However, I travel to Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Miami frequently.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

Growing up in Chicago is a fun and fast paced lifestyle. I grew up with the beach behind my house (Lake Michigan). So, most of my childhood was spent swimming in the water, making sand castles and eating Chicago style dogs at the park next door. It was great. As a Chicagoan, when you leave the city, you learn to appreciate all that the city has to offer. We offer a large variety of foods from a hundred different cultures, beautiful art and museums throughout the city, as well as a wealth of shopping, and entertainment activities.  You could probably spend 10 years in the chi and never get to do all the activities we have going. I love it!

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Achieving numerous magazine covers has definitely been a career highlight. It takes some people years to get covers. I’ve managed to get 4 in 1 month! I’m humbly thankful.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve over the next 12 months?

Over the next 12 months, I would like to be the “face” of a major label brand or company. I would love to participate in TV commercials and see myself in major motion picture films.

Q: What do you do to relax?

I exercise, and then drink tea, and eat English muffins with ham and eggs. This does it up for me!

Q: Where would your favorite holiday (vacation) be and why? I love Christmas, specifically I would love to take a vacation to Switzerland, and experience skiing, and the holiday spirit they have going on there. I think it would be a fun trip!

Adella Pasos

Q: What songs are on your iPod at the moment?

I have a LARGE variety of music stretching from Simon and Garfunkel to Andréa Bocelli, and then from Red Hot Chili Peppers to Lil’ Wayne. I’m a big fan of all music; there is not one genre of music that I dislike.

Q: Do you have any interesting hobbies? I have a few hidden talents. You would probably not expect to know that I’m a painter, and artist in nature. I have a passion for the arts, and believe art has much relevancy to all of our lives. I specialize in oil and acrylic painting, sculpture and also graphic arts.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring models what would it be?

I would say like my mother tells me, “stay strong, and never give up “. The end isn’t near, keep pressing towards the future and put 100% into all of your work. It’s very important to stay hungry for achievement. This is a winning combination in my book.

Q: What motivates you to do what you do?

My drive and ambition to be great and do great things helps motivate me to get to the next l I aspire to move my career to a level that isn’t stipend by just what one industry depicts it to be. I would eventually want to achieve a global presence, and use it to also give back and help others.  I know many say, “girl, you set your goals high”, however I was always told, “reach for the stars baby”!

Spotlight Interview – Joy Hu

Joy Hu (胡歆宜) is a Chinese-Canadian fashion designer who is currently living and working in New York. In 2012, Joy established her fashion brand known as ‘Joy Hu Collection (歆宜禮服)’ and at Urbanity Chic, when we checked out her Spring / Summer 2013 we were impressed by her fusion of Oriental and Western influences. Despite Joy being extremely busy promoting her current line but also working on her new 2013 / 2014 collection we were delighted when she agreed to be interviewed by Urbanity Chic. Read the entire interview below where Joy discusses, amongst other things, how she initially became interested in fashion design, what fashion icons she is inspired by and what she does to relax when not working.

Q: What are you currently working on?

Currently I am working on our Fall / Winter 2013/2014 collection, which will debut in NYFW 2013.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

2012 has been a turning point for me. I felt I grew up with my brand. I did the rebranding for my new label; my designs have become more sophisticated and more elegant.  Many celebrities were seen wearing my clothes this year such as Miss Universe Natalie Glebova and Miss Jamaica Chantal Zaky. Media include CTV and Flare. Also, I relocated to a bigger showroom in Toronto and began a showroom in New York this year. Another exciting project was I started to work with some well-known stylist who works for American Vogue. I have been working with top photographers for worldwide submission.

Q: What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion for me is art and self-expression. It requires creativity but it also reflects personal lifestyle.

The more I grow the more my understanding for fashion changes. My first sketches were for my Barbie. I used to style her hair, paint her nails, and glue elements to her clothes. Back then there weren’t any add-on pieces for Barbies so I made them myself. Also, I designed outfits for my favourite comic character -- The Queen of Egypt, from Japan, in a comic book called Daughter Of Nile. I remember spending days to sketch the same dress over and over again until it was perfect. Designing was always on my mind. Even in my dreams -- I used to dream about designs. So much work goes into designing an item. I believe that’s why brand names are expensive and everyone is after them -- essentially, fashion is art, which is difficult to justify. Whereas, the value of a brand comes much easier. Each brand has its own style, each brand is associated with a word: classy, sexy, high-end, mid-class, street fashion and so on.

Q: Which modern day fashion designers or fashion icons do you look up to?

Christian Dior S.A. and Valentino are my favorite designers. One is fun and elegant, while the other is very proper and elegant.  One thing they have in common is their fame for their handcraft. I like to put both fun and proper style into my collection because this reflects the person I am.

Q: What was the first thing you ever designed?

I designed my first piece when I was 13 years old -- it was a princess dress.  I sketched the design, used the fabric my dad brought home from London, and got it made by a high-end couture house.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration?

My customers and museums. I started going to art museums at the age of six -- I think that’s where most of my inspirations come from. Whenever I travel, the first spot I will visit is the art museums and art galleries. Essentially, the goal of my line is not just to create art but also to make each woman look fabulous, therefore I am always taking feedback from my clients and meeting their needs.

Q: Who inspires you?

Guys are my muse, either the ones I date or the ones who are my close friends. Sounds strange, doesn’t it? Well, its not! Think about this -- a big part of clothing is for social reasons, so technically women dress for men most of the time.

Q: How would you define the style your work exemplifies?

I am a very girly girl. I can wear dresses everyday: at work, home, and when I go out with my friends.

My personal style is a cocktail of romantic elegance with a modern sexy chic twist and a dash of diamond.

Since fashion is art to me, each piece needs to be hand-made using high end and often-unusual European fabrics, which employs signature hand-embellishing techniques in each creation. I also like lace. I find it super-feminine and sexy. There is a saying: “Lace is a woman’s second skin.” Therefore, for my ready-to-wear collection I mainly use lace as fabric.

Q: How would you define your personal style?

My designs represent me -- a reflection of who I am. I can’t imagine myself designing something that I would never be seen in.

Q: Where are you based?

Right now I am based in NYC and Toronto. I travel to London and Paris quite often.  I see the world like a village -- within ten hours I can be anywhere I want to be. I never limit myself to one place geographically. I want as many people to see and wear my clothes and not because I want to generate more money but more for a feeling of belonging.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

I was born in China, but my Chinese friends always say I don’t think like a typical Chinese even when I was in China. I guess its due to the fact that I started to learn about western culture since the age of three, because my dad is in the import and export business so he gave me the opportunity to learn about how the world operates at a very young age. I think China is very proper and regulated, with lack of freedom to encourage worldview but the people are super-hard working.

Canada is very peaceful and accepts differences. America is a very productive country and more straightforward like me. If I don’t like you I am not going to waste a minute with you. This is why America has been one of the most powerful countries in the world. England seems proper from outside but actually very wild and rebellious inside which is also who I am sometimes. France is very delicate and romantic. Italy is very fun and creative.

So if I could choose, I would like to live in Beijing, Toronto, New York, London, Paris and Milan. But I would call myself Miss International -- a Chinese-Canadian who works in New York, and everywhere else in the world.

Joy Hu Collection

Joy Hu Collection

Joy Hu Collection

Joy Hu Collection

Q: How would you define your city’s fashion?

If I call myself Chinese Canadian, then I would say Canada is mostly English Fashion as Canada used to be a colony of UK for a long time, and we have lots of European immigrants here. But nowadays, since we have lots of immigrants from all over the world, and they live in their own communities and have their own community shops, I can’t say there is real Canadian fashion.  But I can say that there are different styles of fashion created by Canadian Fashion Designers. Take me as an example, European style is my main style but after all I was born Chinese, therefore you can still see the trace of Asian culture. My style is “When West meets East”.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Celebrities who have worn my designs, magazines articles, features on TV and my showroom in New York.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve over the next 12 months?

My goal this year is to get my clothes into 50-100 different stores across North America and to start distributing in London also. To my dear UK readers, feel free to write to me: joy@joyhucollection.com

Q: What do you do to relax?

Aha! I like this question. Spiritual life is always a big part of my life. I practice Zen and I meditate. When I lose my inner peace, for whatever reason, I either go to a temple to mediate or I do yoga. Also, I like to do outdoor activities such as hiking. I love spending quality time with my family and friends. I believe in energy, so I hang out with people who have positive energy.

Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?

It depends on what kind of vacation I need. If it’s a learning vacation, which I do quite often, then it can be anywhere that I haven’t been to. If it’s more of a relaxing vacation then there is no such place as ‘holiday paradise’ for me. I find it’s more about whom I am vacationing with that matters. However, if I have to choose, I would definitely go somewhere where there is water. I am taking scuba diving classes so I will probably go somewhere with beautiful beaches.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

Uoon I -- Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto (Vrioon). It’s a balanced harmony of fast and slow beats. Strangely enough, this song turns me on so much.

Q: Do you have interesting hobbies?

Cooking, designing, painting. Simply creating makes me happy.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to tell our readers about you?

The person I am, I find, is always the hardest question to answer. As I evolve as a person and a designer, the view today doesn’t always stand for my view tomorrow.

Q: Where can we find out more about or purchase your work?

You can find more about me on my website: www.joyhucollection.com

You can purchase my ready to wear collection online at: www.highstreetdress.com

For exclusive custom dresses you will probably see me in person. You can send me an email request on my website. I always travel, so I could be in your area tomorrow!

Q: What motivates you to do what you do?

Passion. I love what I do.  I have a sense of belonging when I design. If it feels right just go for it! Never give up, but always learn from mistakes.

My favourite quote: “If something is not happening yet it doesn’t mean it will never happen, it just means you are not ready for it.”  Misfortune has always turned out to be a big fortune for me.

My personal style is very laid back, I like to wear plain clothes in the winter that way I can accessorize more. Spotlight Interview – Allegra Modelinc

Allegra Modelinc is a successful catwalk and fashion model who was brought up in Geneva but now lives and works in London. After learning about Allegra’s story and checking out some of her impressive fashion portfolio we were impressed and were delighted when she agreed to complete an interview with Urbanity Chic. Read the full in-depth interview below where Allegra discusses, amongst other things, what it was like growing up in Geneva, what fashion icons she would love to work with in the future and how her work in fashion supports her charitable work.

Allegra Modelinc

Allegra Modelinc

Q: How did you get into fashion modeling?

I started modeling by accident in 1999 at the age of 9 years old in Geneva (Switzerland). A good friend of my mom had her own agency (Seven) and thought I was pretty tall for my age. She gave me a try and I ended up doing catwalk regularly for the spring/summer and autumn/winter for a new brand fashion brand in one of the biggest shopping malls in the center of Geneva.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

The last 12 months have been rewarding for me. I have had the opportunity to do incredible catwalk shows for the London Fashion week, Pakistan Fashion Week, Zen Africa Magazine, I’ve also had the opportunity to model in the National Luxury and lifestyle awards seeing celebrities such as Stacey Solomon and Lucien Lavinscout.

Q: Who inspires you?

God and my mother are my main inspirations in life. God blesses me to carry out all my goals and my mom taught me to have determination and be independent from an early age. In the fashion industry there’s plenty models who inspire me; such as Beverly Peele, Naomi Campbell (she’s such an icon!!), Waris Dirie for her amazing journey and humanitarian organization, Liya Kebede, Alek Wek, Yasmeen Ghauri, Tyra Banks and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

Q: Which modern day fashion designers or fashion icons do you look up to?

The list is long! There’s plenty of urban and high fashion designers that I love including Kesshia Kumari, Lucy in Disguise by Lilly Allen and her sister Sarah Owen, Jean-Paul Gautier, Manish Malhotra, Victoria Beckham, Chandra Maharaj, Mary Tataw E etc…

Q: Do you prefer to shoot on location or in the studio?

I found shooting on location more inspirational. However I prefer to do studio shoots when it’s for highlighting an item such as bags or a shoe collection.

Q: Do you have any interesting stories about a particular photo shoot, or a casting you’d like to share?

My casting for Botswana at London Fashion week was one of the most memorable for me. I had a meeting at the Embassy of Botswana at Oxford Circus in London. I was welcomed and treated like an important politician (laugh). I have good memories of that occasion.

Q: How do you prepare for a fashion shoot or show?

I just take care of myself by doing beauty sessions, relaxing when I can to look good and to be fresh and full of energy for the big day.

Q: Do you have a favourite photograph?

I love the nude picture of Grace Jones taken by Jean-Paul Goude. I found it brilliant!!

Q: Who is your favorite photographer?

From all the photographers I’ve worked with until now, Marija Berjoza is my favorite. Oliver Morris is also excellent. He can be very impressive when you first meet him (laugh). I would also love to work with Jean-Paul Goude and Anne Geddes.

Allegra Modelinc

Allegra Modelinc

Q: Is there anybody you would like to work with?

In term of photography, Anne Geddes and Jean-Paul Goude are my working goals’ dream. I love their work, what Jean-Paul Goude created with Grace Jones remain legendary until today and Anne Geddes managed to touch people with her intimate and crushing portrait of babies and women. When it comes to brands, I would love to work for Juicy Couture, Victoria Beckham and Kimora Lee Simmons.

Q: What does fashion mean to you?

For me, fashion is a form of art and freedom. It doesn’t have limitations, rules, social status or color. It not only promotes an idea, a dream, and a creation of a designer but it can also be used for charity like we saw with Oliveiro Toscani’s work with the United Colors of Benetton.

Q: How would you define your personal style?

I define myself as a polyvalent woman in term of style. I do not have a specific style it all depends of my crush for the outfit I see. I can look classy chic one day & funky the next one.

Q: Where are you based?

I am based in London but travel to Switzerland and France quit often.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

I’m from Geneva, in the French speaking side of Switzerland. It’s a small international city where the quality of life is good; with lovely views of lake of Geneva and UN Headquarters. In wintertime, it’s also a great place to be for skiing, a sport that I love to do. In term of fashion opportunities it unfortunately wasn’t the right place to be for me, as Switzerland doesn’t have a developed fashion industry.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Working in famous fashion weeks and the National luxury and lifestyle awards were the greatest experiences I’ve had so far.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve over the next 12 months?

I would like to work with my favorite designers and photographers.

Allegra Modelinc

Allegra Modelinc

Q: What do you do to relax?

I enjoy simple things. I love to pray, go to cinema, read books or a restaurant with my friends & family.

Q: Where would your favorite holiday (vacation) be and why?

I’ve fortunately had the opportunity to travel a lot. I have seen many places but still dream to see more. Among those my favourite one would be Botswana because I love their culture and political policy, Mexico (Coyoacan) because this is where my favorite painter Frida Kahlo lives. I’d love to discover the country. I ‘d also like to visit St Lucia. I feel attracted to that beautiful Island, as well as Dubai.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

My top songs these days are; A Day in the Life of Benjamin by Andre 3000 (Outkast), Come Nuh Baby by Miss St Lucia 2010 Aiasha Gustave, Smile by Hil St Soul, Amazing Grace by Destiny’s Child, You Know What’s Up by Donell Jones and Left Eye, Till The Dawn by Drew Sidora, Wine Slow by Gyptian, Sincerely Jane by Janelle Monáe, Michael Jackson’s Earth Song, Carolina by Awilo and Didn’t Cha Know by Erykah Badu.

Q: Do you have any interesting hobbies?

I love skiing, reading history/political books and traveling. I have been to 10 countries and have visited over 45 cities in France, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Greece, United States of America, England and Switzerland.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring models what would it be?

To believe in your dream, have faith, work hard and keep your integrity.

Q: What motivates you to do what you do?

My faith leads me through amazing opportunities and my personal history. I grew up in poverty but was taught about perseverance and hard work by my mother from an early age.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

I’m an activist model and have been working with various charity organizations such as Save The Children. My mother has also founded her own charity cause “soupe populaire Allegra & Michel-ofik” that’s aim is to take care of extremely poor children that live on the streets in an area of Kinshasa in the DR Congo.

Editor’s Note: Allegra’s great bone structure and dynamic energy will ensure that she continues to be in demand over the coming months and years as a fashion model. At Urbanity Chic we’re also really impressed how she uses her fashion career to support her charity work that definitely makes a difference to those most in need.
